A short memorable trip to Bavaria(Bayern) | Places to visit in Bavaria, Germany

Bavaria is one of the most beautiful place to visit in Germany, and with its capital city of Munich, it should definitely be on your travel wish list. I visited Bavaria on a 5-day trip, and it’s one of the most memorable trips of my life. Although I think it could have been even better if I had planned it in advance, it was still great. In this article, I will share every place that you must visit in Bavaria, Germany and provide some tricks to minimise your costs.

Transport

Deutschland Ticket

If you’re not familiar with the Deutschland-Ticket, it’s a monthly subscription that costs 49 Euros per month. This ticket allows you to use any form of transportation in Germany, except for IC, EC, ICE, and some special trains.

How to plan your journey?

You can easily check your train’s schedule on the Deutsche Bahn website or their app. Since the Deutschland-Ticket covers only Regional trains, you might need to switch trains during your journey. But don’t worry, you can find all the connecting train options on the website or app. If a train happens to be canceled, the app will show you alternative connections.

Accommodation

If you don’t have any friends living in Munich like me, you need some place to sleep at night after your tiring trips. But expensive accommodation can cut your budget for your trip. It would be great to get a good place to spend your night without spending very much. Worry not, I have just the place for you.

The Tent (Open from 1. Jun – 04 Oct)

The Tent is a great choice for spending your nights while exploring the beautiful state of Bavaria. It’s affordable and offers opportunities for socializing. Even if you’re an introvert like me, you have the option to enjoy your own space by booking a private tent. The starting price for accommodation is as low as 10 Euros, one of the most budget-friendly options I’ve come across in Germany.

The washrooms are cleaned daily, and the overall environment is pleasant. You can either purchase breakfast from their cafe or use the Guest Kitchen to prepare your own meals – that’s what we did. (link to their website)

Places to visit

Now that we have discussed everything essential, let’s talk about the places you should visit on your trip to Bayern.

Day 1

Munich

Olympiapark near BMW Welt in Munich

If you are visiting Bavaria, how can you forget the capital city of Munich. You can dedicate your one day, exploring the city of Munich. Rent a bike or walk through the city. Walk through Marienplatz and enjoy the beauty of German architecture. Don’t forget to visit the old and new town hall.

Some other places you should visit:

  • English Garden
  • Alte Pinakothek
  • Nymphenburg Palace
  • BMW Welt and BMW Museum

Day 2 – 4

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

It’s a stunning town in Bavaria that borders Austria. Home to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, it offers numerous wonderful places to visit. I’ll share efficient tips for enjoying the most of your time here.

Day 2
Zugspitze
The Alps

Zugspitze is Germany’s tallest mountain, offering an incredible experience you won’t forget. Spending a whole day there is a good idea to really enjoy it. First, it takes about 2 hours to get to Zugspitzbahnhof in Grainau. But remember, your Deutschland ticket only works until Grainau.

If you want to go higher than Grainau, you need another ticket. It costs 68 Euros (right now), or 58 Euros if you’re 16-18 years old. This ticket lets you go up and down Zugspitze – and it’s worth the money. There are two main ways to get to the top of Germany.

The first way is to start at Eibsee, which is between Grainau and Zugspitze. You can take a cable car from Eibsee to the top of Zugspitze. Then you can check out the Glacier and come back down to Eibsee on the cable car.

The other way is a cool train ride through a really long tunnel (around 3-4 kilometers). Instead of getting off at Eibsee, you stay on the train and reach the Glacier. After checking out the Glacier, you can go up to the top of Zugspitze. To come back, there’s a special cogwheel car that takes you down to Eibsee.

A picturesque view at Eibsee

After you’ve had your fill of the mountains, take some time to appreciate the beauty of Eibsee. It’s absolutely enchanting. Find a quiet spot, relax by the lake, and enjoy some peaceful moments.

Day 3
Königsee and Obersee
A boat sailing in Königsee

These lakes look like they’re straight out of a wallpaper. You can also catch a glimpse of Germany’s highest waterfall here. My suggestion: Arrive early. We went quite late and missed the waterfall. So, come early, take your time, and savor this scenic view.

The boat ticket costs around 27 Euros and gets you to the Obersee in 55 minutes. The boat ride offers a beautiful view. They even pause the boat for 5-10 minutes to play a local trumpet, which is a charming tradition. The echo of the trumpet is really soothing to hear.

There are two ways to reach the Obersee. The recommended approach is to start by visiting the Obersee. Enjoy the view, take photos, hike to the waterfall, and then head to the second destination, Königsee. You can try smoked fish here and relax after your hike.

Day 4
Partnach Gorge
Beautiful scenery at Partnach Gorge

One word to describe the experience: INCREDIBLE! It’s both breathtakingly beautiful and slightly scary. The powerful river waves were truly extraordinary. The experience varies based on the weather and the time of year you visit. Exploring the mountains and getting near little waterfalls brings you right into nature’s embrace. The ticket for Partnach Gorge costs {7 Euros}.

Day 5

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
The medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in northern Bavaria

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the well-preserved medieval towns in Germany. I couldn’t go there as I didn’t get time, and it’s around a 4-hour journey from the tent, but I’ve always wanted to go there. After visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can take some time to go here and enjoy the beauty of this medieval town.
